Aristoteles Giagounidis is Head of the Clinic for Oncology, Hematology and Palliative Medicine at Marien Hospital, Düsseldorf, Germany. He received his medical degree in 1992 from Eberhard-Karls-University in Tübingen, and then worked in several hospitals in the UK as a junior doctor. He became resident physician in the Haematology/Oncology Department of Heinrich-Heine-University of Düsseldorf, Germany, and gained board certification in 1999. He later became central reviewer of the German Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) Study Group.
Dr Giagounidis's research interests are MDS and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. His clinical practice focuses on haematological malignancies, including acute and chronic leukaemias, MDS, myeloproliferative disorders, lymphomas and plasmacytomas.
In addition to being a reviewer for several scientific journals, Dr Giagounidis is the author of several book chapters and numerous articles published in peer-reviewed journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Blood, and Leukemia.

Valeria Santini is Associate Professor at the University of Florence Medical School, Florence, Italy. She received her medical degree in 1986 from the University of Florence and became a consultant in Haematology in 1988. From 1988 to 1991 she completed a fellowship with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, Netherlands. She then undertook training in the USA at the Leukemia Unit of the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center within the University of Texas in Houston.
Prof. Santini’s research interests include myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute and chronic myeloid leukaemias (AML and CML). She runs the MDS and CML Programme at the Haematology Unit at the AOU Careggi in Florence.
Prof. Santini is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the Aplastic Anaemia and MDS International Foundation, and a member of the American Society of Hematology, the European Haematology Association (EHA) and the MDS Foundation. She has served on the Executive Board of the Italian Society of Haematology for two terms, and the Italian Society of Experimental Haematology as Vice-President. She is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed papers published in international journals and has been an invited speaker at numerous international meetings including the EHA, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (2007: educational session on MDS), The American Society of Haematology (educational session on MDS 2012) and several national haematology societies.
